Diomedes Ancient Coins

COLLECTION

Ancient coins connect us directly to the people who made and used them — merchants, soldiers, city-states that no longer exist. This site explores that connection through a personal collection spanning the Greek world, resources for those just starting out, and original research into some of the earliest coinage ever struck.

New to ancient coins?

Greek coins can seem daunting at first: unfamiliar grading systems, obscure mints, and a market full of pitfalls. The resources here are designed to help you find your footing — from understanding coin standards and how to buy safely, to building a collection that genuinely excites you.

Looking for research?

This site publishes original notes on South Italian incuse coinage — including reassessments of the Sybaris destruction date, denomination attribution, and the use of hubbing in die production. The coin image archive draws on seven Magna Graecian mints and is built to support typological and die-study work.

Looking for Aesthetics?

Ancient Greek coins are widely admired for their artistic refinement, particularly those from the Classical period. Cities like Syracuse, Athens, and Akragas produced coins featuring strikingly naturalistic depictions of gods, animals and mythological scenes. Their enduring beauty has influenced numismatic and artistic traditions for centuries, and many examples are considered miniature masterpieces, prized by collectors and museums for both historical significance and exceptional craftsmanship.
